Practice areas

Pieter specializes in privacy and data protection and ICT law in the broadest sense. He has a strong legal background in other matters as well, including EU law, intellectual property law, arbitration law and international law.

As a lawyer at Timelex, Pieter advises both public and private sector clients, aiming to provide pragmatic solutions to complex legal questions, mostly related to data protection and cyber security.

Additionally, Pieter also acts as a legal advisor in EU-funded Horizon 2020 projects related to complex ICT implementations. There, he acts as a lawyer to the consortium of companies, universities and NGO’s implementing the specific Action in question, dealing with questions of data protection, intellectual property, ethics, contract law, and anything else that may arise.

Academic activities and memberships

Pieter is a co-editor of the International Encyclopaedia of Laws, for the cyber law encyclopaedia. In that capacity he reviews and edits national monographs from around the world on the cyber law of a specific country.

Additionally, Pieter publishes regularly and has consistent speaking and teaching engagements, mostly related to GDPR.

Professional admissions 

Pieter has been a member of the Dutch-Speaking Bar Association of the Brussels Bar since 2016.

Prior professional experience

Before joining Timelex in October 2016, Pieter was employed as an academic researcher at the Jean Monnet Chair for European Law and European Integration at Saarland University. In that capacity Pieter mainly researched the current challenges facing data protection in the European Union. He also published several articles on data protection related topics.
